SL Airport Expo Blog Spotlight: Sylvie Etoile

Our bog spotlights continue! This time it is on Sylvie Etoile, owner of Poppyport Airport!

QUESTIONS RELATED TO YOUR SL AIRPORT: POPPYPORT:

1.  What inspired you to create your airport in Second Life?
I asked Tig Spikers about selling her products in my Mediaworks shop and she said but it's not aviation related? ........ so I built a small hoverport alongside an Airworks shop but the location wasn't very good, so then I started to think about somewhere better ......... and I met Judy Dressler and joined the SL 99's female flying group.

2.  Tell us about your airport, what were your aims and goals in Second Life, when you created it?
I've always liked building things for people to enjoy, and an airport seemed like one of the ultimate things to create ....... and my building partner at Poppyport, who designed the actual terminal building, is AnaVictoria Morales who's a totally ace building designer and an RL architect.

3.  Is your airport modeled or inspired after a real life airport?    If so which one?
Poppyport isn't modelled on any airport in particular, but we like art deco design and that period of time, and it fitted in with being in the SL 99's too.  One of the main things I wanted was to make it realistic and interesting and fun, and the biggest little airport in SL!   And omg I've learned so much about airports and runways and everything and it's the biggest thing I've ever done in SL!

4.  How long have you owned your airport?  is your airport opened to the general public?  Is a group required to rezz?  What are some activities or items that people can do at your airport?
Poppyport has been open as a civilian/general purpose airport since last Christmas.  It's open to everybody and you don't need a group to rezz (there's a 20 minute autoreturn). We are still developing the airport but right now we have a runway for light-to-medium aircraft, a lower deck with aircraft parking and plane stands/tiedowns to rent and a plane elevator up to the runway, a seaplane dock, helipads, single-use helis and light planes to rezz, a shop with a dozen vendors from some of the best planemakers in SL and also boxes of free aircraft, a visitors lounge with a dance floor, video screens, a gallery where our flying instructor is based and where you can get maps and stuff, a pilots club above for fliers to hang out and eat at Mom's Roadkill Diner, a control tower you can visit the top of to see the airport below, a viewing point over the water to sit and watch the planes landing and taking off ......... we're just talking to somebody to work as our fire chief and run our emergency services ........ oh and we can frisk you and check your luggage too!

5.  We are thrilled to have your airport come to our SL Airport Expo and be a part of Aviation Month! What inspired you to take part?
You did lol ......... and I love the diversity of SL and talking to and meeting people and trying to do stuff!

QUESTIONS RELATED TO YOU:

1.  How long have you been in Second Life?
Since 2006

2.  What made you first join Second Life?
I guess it let me do and be things I couldn't in RL lol.

3.   What are some of the strangest things you have experienced or seen in Second Life?
All the things that make me blush!

4.  Other than owning an airport in Second Life and being interested in aviation, what are some other things you like to do while you are in Second Life?
I run a Mediaworks shop, make signs and graphics, build websites, run parties, love building places for people to enjoy and landscaping and interior design, like sailing as well as flying, shopping, love being with my family and friends ..... and making new friends too! - I have a lego brain so I'm good at finding things and putting them to together I guess.

5.  If you could invite anyone from RL into SL, who would it be?
Richard Branson

SL Airport Expo Blog Featured Airports of the Day!

Today we will feature the following SL Airports:

Special thanks to Col. Whitewolf  Mumfuzz for providing the descriptions for each airport!
==================================================================================
Owner/Operator: Yumix Writer
Location:  Yumix Canal

Yumix Canal:  This is a Japanese owned aviation community, with plenty for everyone! It features a very spacious airport at Yumix Ocean, which can accomodate even the largest aircraft in SL. In the nearby sims, visitors are able to experience a myriad of different environments, suiting various tastes. While primarily civil in nature, combat may take place in the nearby sims.

While not in flight, aviators and visitors may partake in the friendly Japanese community, or do a spot of shopping at the aviation mall just next door at Yumix Canal.

Owners:  Brigadier Generals Devyn Smyth and Deidre Faulds
Location:  Baitoushan

Baitoushan Intercontinental Airport:  Located in the continent of Corsica, Baitoushan is a sprawling airport complex built on a platform, raising it above ground level. This unusual layout gives the facility room to house both an airport and a marina under the airport. On the airport level, aviators will find two runways, allowing large passenger aircraft to land and takeoff simultaneously, with little chance of collision. A collection of hangars and a terminal building is also located on this level, housing several vendors.

A roadway links the airport level with the marina level. While primarily for seacraft, aviators flying seaplanes will also find a nice location to berth their seaplanes while they take in the sights at Baitoushan.

Location: Inari

Poppyport:  An art deco style airport with modern facilities, Poppyport conveys a homely feel to its visitors. It has an all around cozy feeling to it, and includes a cafe and lounge on its second and third floors. The airport has helipads up on the roof, and a single runway to accomodate general aviation craft. A small dock by the shoreline serves boats and seaplanes.

Visitors to the airport will be pleased to know that there are demo rezzers available for a range of helicopters and planes, so even those who do not own an aircraft can drop in and fly away in a demo! There is also a small store with numerous vendors, selling various aviation products.
